Advancing Indigenous Science and Engineering Society (AISES) recognizes that college is a very overwhelming expense for many and aims to provide funding for Native students to advance their education. There are scholarships for undergraduate, graduate, and even community college students pursuing a degree in a STEM field. You must have a free AISES membership to apply.

The ACS scholarship is for undergraduate students passionate about pursuing a career in chemical sciences. This opportunity includes financial support, professional development opportunities, and access to the program newsletter. Applications are limited to students in the following majors: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemical Technology, and other chemistry-based sciences.

The Department of War SMART scholarship program provides students in STEM fields with resources to excel academically and launch their career. This scholarship provides students with more than just financial support. It also offers summer internship opportunities, a dedicated mentor, and a career with the Department of War as a civilian employee after graduation. The opportunity is available to both undergraduate and graduate students.

The Barry M. Goldwater scholarship provides up to $7,500 for tuition, fees, books, and room/board for undergraduate students who intend to pursue a research-based career in a STEM field. Successful applicants show commitment to this career path through meaningful participation in research and demonstrated ownership in all or part of the research project.

The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience is a non-profit organization that provides primarily STEM internships across 100 different countries. Internships can range from 6 weeks up to 1 year. Participants will gain professional experience and develop an extensive network of like-minded peers and scholars. There is a registration fee ($100) to gain access to a database of available internships. You can choose what is right for you and apply at any time, with most internship opportunities opening in February-April. A US IAESTE council will nominate one student for each position.

This fellowship provides funding for research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in STEM and engineering fields at accredited U.S. institutions. The National Institutes of Health provides funding to pre and postdoctoral research students for mentored research training and career development. There are many programs that provide individual grants, depending on the career level of the applicant.

The National Institutes of Health undergraduate scholarship supports undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need and are interested in pursuing careers in biomedical, behavioral, or social science research. The award includes two paid service commitments: a ten-week/full-time summer internship at the NIH for each year of scholarship support and one year of full-time employment at the NIH after graduation. The post-graduation service commitment may be deferred until the completion of an advanced degree program.

Awards scholarships to future leaders in environmental conservation, Tribal public policy, and Native health care. Commitment to bettering these fields demonstrated through public service is a valued aspect of this award. Scholarships can be used to cover undergraduate academic expenses. The University of Montana has produced the most Udall scholars of any university in the United States! Wow!
