Paying the SEVIS I‑901 Fee (F‑1 & J‑1 Students)

The SEVIS I‑901 fee is required for most F‑1 and J‑1 students before you can apply for a U.S. student visa. This page explains who must pay, when to pay, and how to complete the payment correctly.

 

What Is the SEVIS I‑901 Fee?

SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) is the U.S. government system that tracks international students.

  • The SEVIS I‑901 fee supports this system
  • The fee is paid to the U.S. government, not to the University of Montana
  • You must pay this fee before scheduling your visa interview

 

Who Must Pay the SEVIS Fee?

You must pay the SEVIS I‑901 fee if:

  • You are applying for an F‑1 or J‑1 visa
  • You received an I‑20 (F‑1) or DS‑2019 (J‑1) from UM or other sponsoring organization

Some J‑1 students sponsored by governments or organizations may be exempt. If you are unsure, contact International Students and Scholars (ISS).

 

When Should I Pay the SEVIS Fee?

Pay the SEVIS fee immediately after receiving your I‑20 or DS‑2019.

Do not wait until your visa appointment is scheduled.

 

Step‑by‑Step: How to Pay the SEVIS I‑901 Fee

 

Step 1: Gather Your Information

Before you begin, have the following ready:

  • Your passport
  • Your I‑20 (F‑1) or DS‑2019 (J‑1)
  • A credit or debit card (or other accepted payment method)

 

Step 2: Go to the SEVIS Fee Website

Visit the official SEVIS fee payment website.

Select Pay I‑901 Fee.

 

Step 3: Complete the Online Form

Enter your information exactly as it appears on your I‑20 or DS‑2019, including:

  • Your full name
  • Date of birth
  • SEVIS ID number (starts with “N”)

Carefully review all information before submitting.

 

Step 4: Pay the Fee

  • Follow the instructions to submit your payment
  • Make sure you receive a payment confirmation

 

Step 5: Print and Save Your Receipt

  • Print the SEVIS I‑901 payment receipt
  • Save a digital copy for your records

You must bring this receipt to your visa interview.

 

Important Reminders

  • You cannot attend a visa interview without proof of SEVIS payment
  • Pay the fee only once for the same SEVIS ID
  • Use the official SEVIS website only—do not pay through third‑party sites
  • F-2 and J-2 dependents do not pay the SEVIS fee
