Visa Application Checklist (F‑1 & J‑1)
This time‑sensitive, step‑by‑step checklist applies to both F‑1 and J‑1 international students. Follow the steps in order to avoid delays in your visa application.
Step 1: Receive Your Immigration Document
MOST IMPORTANT – START HERE
Timing: As soon as it is issued
You must receive your immigration document from the University of Montana before applying for a visa.
- F‑1 students: Form I‑20
- J‑1 students: Form DS‑2019
Carefully check that the following information is correct:
- Your name (must match your passport exactly)
- Date of birth
- Program start date
Do not apply for a visa before receiving this document.
Important note for Canadian citizens: You do not need to apply for a visa, but you must pay the I‑901 SEVIS Fee before entering the U.S. in F‑1 or J-1 status.
Step 2: Pay the SEVIS I‑901 Fee
Timing: Immediately after receiving your I‑20 or DS‑2019
- Pay the SEVIS I‑901 fee online
- Print and save your SEVIS payment receipt
- Review step-by-step instructions on SEVIS Fee Payment
You must bring proof of SEVIS payment to your visa interview.
⚠️ Do not skip this step. Your visa appointment cannot proceed without SEVIS payment.
Step 3: Complete the Online Visa Application (Form DS‑160)
Timing: As early as possible
- Complete the DS‑160 online visa application
- Upload a passport‑style photo that meets U.S. requirements
- Print and save the DS‑160 confirmation page (with barcode)
Step 4: Schedule Your Visa Appointment
Timing: As soon as you complete the DS‑160
- Schedule your visa interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate
- Appointment availability varies by country—earlier is better
- Some embassies require:
- A visa application fee
- Courier registration or additional steps
Step 5: Prepare Documents for Your Visa Interview
Timing: Before your appointment
Bring the following documents to your visa interview:
- Valid passport
- I‑20 or DS‑2019 (signed)
- SEVIS fee receipt
- DS‑160 confirmation page
- Financial documents showing you can pay for your studies
- University admission letter
- Any additional documents required by your local U.S. embassy
Step 6: Attend Your Visa Interview
Timing: On your scheduled date
- Arrive early and dress professionally
- Be prepared to explain:
- Your academic program
- Why you chose the University of Montana
- Your plans after completing your studies
Answer all questions clearly and honestly.
Step 7: Receive Your Visa Decision
Timing: After your interview
- If approved, your passport will be returned with your visa
- Processing times vary—do not book travel until you receive your passport
- If additional administrative processing is required, follow the embassy’s instructions carefully
Step 8: Plan Your Travel to the United States
Timing: After visa approval
- You may enter the U.S. no earlier than 30 days before the program start date listed on your I‑20 or DS‑2019
- Book flights that allow you to arrive on or before UM’s International Student Orientation
⚠️ Important Reminder
If you cannot arrive by your program start date, you must contact UM International Students and Scholars at iss@mso.umt.edu before traveling. Arriving late without approval can cause serious immigration problems.
