Graduate Writing Support
The Writing Center offers services to graduate and professional students from every program, division, and department across campus.
We support all written and oral communication projects, including coursework, theses, dissertations, grant proposals, application materials, conference presentations, or personal projects. We work with you at any stage, from brainstorming to reviewing a draft or practicing a presentation. Whatever your comfort level with writing or public speaking, we welcome you!
Support is available via one-on-one appointments, graduate writing groups, writing retreats, and writing workshops. Review the options below or refer to the menu bar to access our services. Please let us know if you have any trouble finding what you’re looking for!
Our Location
Most of our in-person programming takes place at our tutoring center in the Mansfield Library (main level, room 322). Students have the option to attend any appointment online, and most graduate student writing groups and workshops also have online attendance options.
Summer 2026 Programming: Write through summer!
Join Writing Center staff and fellow graduate students for summer programming that provides the accountability and community you need to keep at it. Grab a friend or just bring yourself – writing is better together (we promise). Registration is encouraged but not required (we know summer schedules are tricky).
Workshop: Make a Summer Writing Plan!
Monday, May 18th, 10-11:30am. Carve out some time to make a plan! Join Writing Center staff and fellow graduate students to discuss writing strategies to get you started and to help you stay on track this summer. We'll lead a discussion about goal-setting and scheduling, followed by a chance to map out a plan to reach your summer writing goals. Meet in-person in the Theta Rho Room (4th floor) of the Mansfield Library. Registration is encouraged.
Weekly Summer Writing Groups start May 19th
Tuesdays and Wednesdays, May 19th through July 22nd, 12:30-3:30pm. Attend one or both of these flexible drop-in weekly writing groups. Sessions start off with a brief check-in followed by focused writing time, and conclude with a chance to reflect and set goals for next time. Come as often as you can; stay as long as you are able. Hosted by Writing Center staff, these groups meet in-person at the Mansfield Library room 322. Registration is encouraged.
End-of-Summer Mini-retreats
We plan to offer several half-day on-campus mini-retreats in late August to help you end the summer strong and get a jump on fall semester. Check back in July for details!
Drop-in Hours for Grad Students
If you are unfamiliar with what we do, or curious about our programming, please stop by! During the semester, drop in hours are Mondays 3:30-4:30pm and Tuesdays 9-10am in room 322 of the Mansfield Library. This is a chance to meet briefly with a graduate writing specialist to discuss smaller-order concerns or explore options for additional support.
Individual Consultations
Through individual consultations with our professional tutors, we support all stages of your work on writing assignments, proposals, conference presentations, job applications, capstone projects, theses, and dissertations. You can select a 30 or 60-minute appointment; many graduate students elect to set up recurring appointments.
Appointments are available year-round. Register for an account and sign up for an appointment, or email writingcenter@umontana.edu for assistance with this process. We are always happy to help you identify a consultant best-equipped to meet your needs.
Writing Workshops
We offer graduate writing workshops each semester. Join us for informative, interactive workshops that address graduate-level writing concerns. Schedule and topics vary from semester to semester.
Visit the graduate workshop page for the latest schedule.
Writing Groups
Throughout the year we host multiple weekly accountability groups designed to help you structure your writing time, connect with other writers, generate momentum and reach your writing goals. At each session, a Writing Center staff member welcomes participants and invites you to briefly share writing goals. After a work period we’ll reconvene, share successes or challenges, and articulate next steps before moving on with our days. For the current schedule and offerings, including summer writing groups, please visit the Graduate Student Writing Groups page. Questions? Email writingcenter@umontana.edu.
Writing Retreats
Jump Start is our four-day, writing intensive retreat for graduate students working on a research proposal, capstone project, professional paper, manuscript, thesis, or dissertation. We offer Jump Start during winter break and spring break. For upcoming dates please go to the Jump Start Writing Retreat page.
Instructional Support
Are you teaching a writing course this year? Our professional staff can work with you on curriculum structure, writing assignments, and strategies for evaluating student writing. Invite us to come give a Writing Center orientation to your students, or to talk with them about writing in college. We’re here to help you help them write!
Check out our For Course Instructors page and email writingcenter@umontana.edu to request our support.
