Graduate Writing Fellows
Graduate Writing Fellows (GWFs) are advanced doctoral students trained to work one-on-one with graduate students from across disciplines to support their writing progress. We are delighted to be offering two Graduate Writing Fellowships for the 2026-27 academic year. This opportunity, offered jointly through the Writing Center and the Graduate School, develops participants’ writing, leadership, and teaching skills while directly supporting fellow graduate students and strengthening UM’s campus-wide writing culture.
What do Fellows gain?
Through this opportunity GWFs develop: 1) an ability to teach and mentor student writers from a variety of backgrounds; 2) a deepened understanding of disciplinary writing practices; 3) writing efficacy through mentorship from Writing Center staff and experience working with others; and 4) demonstrable and marketable writing, mentoring and instructional skills. This fellowship complements (does not replace) existing TA/RA funding. Fellows are compensated at $22/hr for up to 8hrs/wk.
Who can apply?
GWFs are PhD students in good standing from STEM or social science fields who have their advisor’s support in pursuing this opportunity. Fellows must be at or near the dissertation stage and/or have additional research, publishing, or writing/communication experience; they must have excellent interpersonal skills and enjoy working with and helping others. Appointed for the academic year, GWFs work alongside the Writing Center’s professional staff for up to 8 hrs/wk at mutually agreed upon hours compatible with the Fellow’s other commitments.
