ASL Interpreting and captioning services
The Office for Disability Equity (ODE) coordinates communication access for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. These services are available:
- American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting - An interpreter translates between spoken English and ASL in real time.
- Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART) - A trained write types spoken words into real-time text.
- Captioned media - Captions are added to pre-recorded videos used in your courses.
These services support your classes and academic activities, club and campus events, and university department events.
Services for students
Service priority
When ASL interpreter and CART availability is limited, requests are prioritized in this order:
- Academic - Classes, field trips, study groups, required class events, and meetings with instructors, academic advisors, and tutors.
- Non-academic and extracurricular student activities - Club meetings, performances, workshops, and student-attended lectures or conferences.
- University-sponsored campus events - University addresses, guest lecturers, recognition ceremonies, celebrations, and conferences.
