Captioned media
Closed captions represent the meaningful audio in a video or recording as on-screen text. The Office for Disability Equity (ODE) provides support by working with faculty to caption their course media.
How students request
Email your course schedule to the service coordinator listed below as early as possible each semester, and again whenever it changes.
Process
- The service coordinator will email faculty to notify them that a student with captioned media accommodations is enrolled in their courses.
- Upon receiving faculty's response, ODE will add captions to their instructional media materials and deliver them to faculty.
Student responsibilities
Keep the service coordinator informed so your services run smoothly. Let them know:
- Your finalized schedule as soon as it is available.
- Any schedule changes, including drops, adds, and withdrawal adjustments during the semester.
- When you no longer need the service.
- Any concerns regarding the captioned media you received.

For faculty
If you plan to show videos in your course, you may be asked to check them for accurate captions.
Contact from ODE
The service coordinator will reach out to you directly. They will explain what captioning support your course.
Checking your video captions
YouTube's auto-generated captions often contain errors. They do not always reflect accurate written English.
If your videos use auto-generated captions, ODE can caption them for you. Send the service coordinator the video links and the date you plan to show each video.
Using professional films or documentaries
If you plan to show a professional movie or documentary, contact the Mansfield Library first. The library may already have a captioned version.
If you have questions, please contact the service coordinator listed above.
