ASL Interpreting and captioning services
The Office for Disability Equity (ODE) coordinates communication access for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. These services are available:
- American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting - An interpreter translates between spoken English and ASL in real time.
- Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART) - CART provides live, verbatim text of spoken communication. A CART writer - a trained stenographer - types in real time so the text appears on your device or a screen.
- Captioned media - Captions are added to pre-recorded videos used in your courses.
These services support access in classes and academic activities, in club and campus events, and at events hosted by university departments.
Services for students
Service priority
When ASL interpreter and CART availability is limited, requests are prioritized in this order:
- Academic includes classes, field trips, study groups, events required for a class, and meetings with instructors, academic advisors, and tutors.
- Non-academic and extracurricular student activities include club meetings, performances, workshops, and student-attended campus lectures and conferences.
- University-sponsored campus events include University addresses, guest lecturers, recognition ceremonies, celebrations, and conferences.
