Private philanthropy plays a major role in assuring the success of our students. While state funding and tuition cover many of our costs, private donations allow us to go beyond the ordinary and offer an extraordinary education to students.

Donations to the UM School of Journalism allow us to:

Offer Scholarships & Awards: Each April, during our annual Dean Stone Awards Banquet, we give more than $150,000 in scholarships and awards to current journalism students.

Feature World-Class Speakers & Visiting Professors: Programs such as the T. Anthony Pollner Distinguished Professorship, the Dean Stone Lecture, and the Jeff Cole Distinguished Lecture give students the opportunity to learn from the best in the field.

Provide Learning Opportunities Outside the Classroom: Student projects including the Native News Honors Project, the annual student documentary, and the Montana Journalism Review allow students an opportunity to go beyond the classroom and explore special topics that affect the state and the nation.

Develop Graduate Research Opportunities: Our Master's degree in Environmental and Natural Resource Journalism, which was established in the fall of 2010, allows graduate students interested in journalism, environmental and earth sciences, and environmental studies an unparalleled opportunity to report on issues affecting the natural world. Our masters’ candidates produce regional and international pieces for the print media, radio, television and online sites. 

Expand Undergraduate Programs & Curriculum: Don Anderson Hall, which opened in the summer of 2007, provided us with the space and technology necessary to forge another 100 years into the future. New classes range from Fashion Photography to News Literacy.
