Gabrielle Lurie, T. Anthony Pollner Professor, Spring 2026
Gabrielle Lurie is an award-winning photojournalist based in San Francisco whose work centers on human connection, social inequality, and the stories too often left untold. Raised in Washington, D.C., she discovered her passion for photography at 17, spending her high school years in the darkroom before going on to study art history and fine art photography at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.
After relocating to San Francisco in 2014 to work as a freelance photojournalist, she joined the staff of the San Francisco Chronicle in 2016, where she has built a distinguished body of work in both still photography and video.
Her unflinching coverage of the opioid crisis — including a series documenting a mother's efforts to save her daughter from drug addiction — earned her back-to-back Pulitzer Prize finalist honors in 2021 and 2022. She has also been recognized by Pictures of the Year International. Beyond her journalism, Lurie serves as an organizer for the Bay Area Women Photograph group and helps manage the Chronicle's internship program.
