Skiing on the Oval

The University of Montana is in Missoula, a city in western Montana with a community of about 75,000 people. Close to 120,000 people live in the metropolitan area.

Set in a river valley in the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 3,200 feet, Missoula enjoys a moderate climate and easy access to downhill and cross-country skiing, camping, backpacking, hiking and mountain biking, hang-gliding, paragliding, kayaking, canoeing, hunting and fishing.

The scenic 200-acre main campus of the University of Montana - Missoula is one of the prettiest campuses in the country. It sits against the backdrop of Mount Sentinel along the banks of the Clark Fork River. The University currently enrolls approximately 10,000 students.

It has Colleges of Humanities & Sciences, Education, Forestry & Conservation, Health, Business, and Arts & Media, a School of Law, as well as a two-year college (Missoula College).

The Department of Mathematical Sciences, in the College of Humanities and Sciences, has about 65 undergraduate majors and 25 graduate students.

Library

The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library, a five-story structure, subscribes to many mathematical and statistical journals. Any missing items can easily be obtained through the interlibrary loan service.

UM Housing

UM Housing provides safe, clean, healthy and affordable living facilities that foster an inclusive community living environment. UM Housing manages three areas: Residence Halls on campus, Lewis & Clark Village, and University Villages - which provide a variety of housing options for graduate students and their families. Lewis & Clark Village and University Villages are in easy walking and biking distance from the main campus, but taking the bus is also convenient.

Transportation

All busses in Missoula are free! Missoula's public bus line, the Mountain Line, serves the campus and the University area. And the student-run UDASH busses provides service to student housing and Missoula College, as well as evening service to downtown Missoula.
