Puerto Rico Territory Profile

The maps on this page explore the American Community Survey 5-year data (Table S1810) on disability by county.

The ACS does not directly measure disability. Instead, it uses a set of disability indicator questions related to difficulty and functional impairment to identify individuals who may experience a disability. If a respondent can answer “yes” to any disability question they are classified as having a disability.

 

Disability Rates: Puerto Rico

This map of Puerto Rico shows general rates of disability at the municipality level. Disability rates are broken into four categories, from 7.0 to 17.4%.

Most of Puerto Rico is considered urban, and overall there are high rates of disability across Puerto Rico. The highest rates (25.4 to 34.2%) are in the middle of the territory, near San Juan, and along the eastern coast. The lowest rates (7.0 to 17.4%) tend to be found along the coasts. 

In the upper corner of the map is an inset map of the United States showing how overall general disability rates in Puerto Rico compare to the rest of the United States. Overall, general disability rates in Puerto Rico are higher than most states, similar to rates of disability in West Virginia.

The five largest urban areas (Arecibo, San Juan, Aguadilla-Isabela--San Sebastián, San Germán--Cabo Rojo--Sabana Grande, and Ponce) are labeled on the map to show if there are any differences between rates in urban compared to rural areas. Arecibo, San Germán--Cabo Rojo--Sabana Grande, and Ponce are in municipalities with the lowest rate of 7.1 to 17.4%. San Juan and Aguadilla-Isabela--San Sebastián are in municipalities with the second-lowest rate of 17.5 to 21.8%.

The five largest urban areas (Arecibo, San Juan, Aguadilla-Isabela--San Sebastián, San Germán--Cabo Rojo--Sabana Grande, and Ponce) are labeled on the map to show if there are any differences between rates in urban compared to rural areas. Rates are mixed across the state.

San Juan is in a municipality with the lowest rate of 33.0 to 47.2%. Ponce, Arecibo and San Germán--Cabo Rojo--Sabana Grande are in municipalities with the second-lowest rate of 47.3 to 52.2%. Aguadilla-Isabela--San Sebastián is in a municipality with the highest rate of 56.2 to 67.9%.

The ACS asks a set of disability indicator questions to determine disability. If a respondent can answer “yes” to any disability question they are classified as having a disability. The data below are for ages 18-64.

Arecibo, Ponce, San Germán--Cabo Rojo--Sabana Grande, and Aguadilla-Isabela--San Sebastián are in municipalities with the lowest rate of 0.0 to 14.3%. San Juan is in a municipality with the highest rate of 23.5 to 39.3%.

Most of the municipalities with the highest rate are in the east-central part of Puerto Rico.

San Juan is in a municipality with the lowest rate of 52.3 to 69.5%. Arecibo and Aguadilla-Isabela--San Sebastián are in municipalities with the second-highest rate of 76.5 to 81.3%. Ponce and San Germán--Cabo Rojo--Sabana Grande are in municipalities with the highest rate of 81.4 to 93.4%.

Disability Rates by Functional Limitation: Puerto Rico

 This map explores the American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year data (Table S1810) on disability estimates by county.

For vision difficulty the ACS asks if a respondent is blind or has serious difficulty seeing, even when wearing glasses. If they answer “yes” they are classified as having a vision difficulty. This data is for all ages.

If they answer “yes” they are classified as having an independent living difficulty. This data is for ages 18 and up.
