Admission Application Instructions

  • Applying for admission to the graduate program in Environmental Science and Natural Resource Journalism is a two-step process:

First: Complete the Online Application

Fill out the online application. There are three steps involved in the application process.

  1. Fill out and submit the Graduate Program portion of the application that comes up when you click the above link. An email will be sent to you with a link to setup your account and finish your application.
  2. Click the link in your email and complete the rest of the application fields and submit.
  3. You will be directed to your application status portal. You will be able to pay your application fee and upload supplemental materials on this page. You will also receive another email with a link to this page so you can log in later and complete these steps and track your application progress.

As part of this process, applicants must do the following

  1. Self-report all colleges and universities attended (including grade point average).
  2. 3 Letters of recommendations.
  3. Upload a statement of interest that shows evidence of potential for successful completion of the program and strong interest in the field of journalism.
  4. Upload resume
  5. Pay the application fee.

Second: Request Official Scores, Transcripts and Five samples:

  1. Request that official transcripts be sent to the Department of Journalism from all colleges and universities you have attended (excluding University of Montana)  Transcripts may also be transmitted electronically through the National Student Clearinghouse.
  2. Five samples of professional or academic writing. Applicants with a background in broadcast, photo or multimedia journalism must submit samples of such work as well. Applicants can upload these samples directly into their online application.

Admission Deadlines

  • Fall Semester - Priority will be given to complete application packets postmarked by February 15. Complete application packets received after this date will be considered on a space available basis. Students admitted to the Master's program may begin only in the fall semester.
  • Spring Semester- Applications are discouraged, but please contact the department directly about space available. You must contact the department before applying for Spring Semester.
