Admission

Admission Application Instructions

  • Applying for admission to the graduate program in History is a two-step process:

First: Complete the Online Application

Fill out the online application. There are three steps involved in the application process.

  1. Fill out and submit the Graduate Program portion of the application that comes up when you click the above link. An email will be sent to you with a link to setup your account and finish your application.
  2. Click the link in your email and complete the rest of the application fields and submit.
  3. You will be directed to your application status portal. You will be able to pay your application fee and upload supplemental materials on this page. You will also receive another email with a link to this page so you can log in later and complete these steps and track your application progress.

As part of this process, applicants must do the following:

  1. Self-report all colleges and universities attended (including grade point average).
  2. Provide contact information for 3 individuals who will provide your 3 Letters of Recommendation.
  3. Upload a statement of purpose (2-3 pages) describing your background, research interests, professional goals, and reasons for choosing the Department of History at the University of Montana. Please also indicate the faculty members you hope to work with while in the graduate program.
  4. Upload a writing sample (preferably a substantial piece of historical writing based on original research).
  5. Pay the application fee.

Second: Request Official Scores and Transcripts:

  1. Request that official transcripts be sent to the University of Montana from all colleges and universities you have attended (excluding University of Montana).  Please see transcript options.

Admission Deadlines

  • Deadline for Ph.D. (Fall Semester start):  Complete application packet must be received by February 1. All applications received by February 1 will be considered for teaching assistantships and fellowships.
  • Deadline for M.A. (Fall Semester start):  Complete applications received by February 1 will be considered for teaching assistantships and fellowships.  Complete applications received by May 1 will be considered for admission.  After May 1, space permitting, applications will be considered for admission on a rolling basis until July 31.

  • Deadline for M.A. (Spring Semester start): Complete application packet must be received by October 15.
