Admission Application Instructions

  • Applying for admission to the graduate program in History is a two-step process:
  1. First: Complete the Online Application (https://www.applyweb.com/apply/uomont/menu.html) As part of this process, applicants must do the following:
    1. Self-report GRE scores. 
    2. Self-report all colleges and universities attended (including grade point average).
    3. Provide contact information for 3 individuals who will provide your 3 Letters of Recommendation.
    4. Upload a statement of purpose (2-3 pages) describing your background, research interests, professional goals, and reasons for choosing the Department of History at the University of Montana. Please also indicate the faculty members you hope to work with while in the graduate program.
    5. Upload a writing sample (preferably a substantial piece of historical writing based on original research).
    6. Pay the application fee.

  2. Second: Request Official Scores and Transcripts:
    1. Request that official GRE scores be sent to the University of Montana using code 4489.  *GRE scores with a test date that is within the past five years OR verifiable GRE scores if the test date is over five years old.  If you are unable to provide GRE scores due to extenuating circumstances, your application may still be considered; please contact the Director of Graduate Studies to request an exemption.
    2. Request that official transcripts be sent to the Department of History from all colleges and universities you have attended (excluding University of Montana).  Transcripts may also be transmitted electronically through the National Student Clearinghouse.

Admission Deadlines

  • Deadline for Ph.D. (Fall Semester start):  Complete application packet must be received by February 1. All applications received by February 1 will be considered for teaching assistantships and fellowships.
  • Deadline for M.A. (Fall Semester start):  Complete applications received by February 1 will be considered for teaching assistantships and fellowships.  Complete applications received by May 1 will be considered for admission.  After May 1, space permitting, applications will be considered for admission on a rolling basis until July 31.

  • Deadline for M.A. (Spring Semester start): Complete application packet must be received by October 15.
